The nation is quickly discovering what Hampton Roads has known for a few years.
Portsmouth’s own Greg Gutty has created a new sound that is leaving fans begging for more. That new sound is called Rehipsoul. It’s an updated fusion of Reggae, Hip-Hop and Rhythm and Blues.
This sound has been percolating in this self -taught musician’s soul for many years.
At the age of 5, little Gregory Yancey Jr in his carefully tailored three-piece suits was the lead singer in an acappella Gospel group named 4 of a Kind.
The boys wowed church and community groups with southern gospel favorites such as This Little Light of Mine and “Amazing Grace. 4 of a Kind even made it to the Apollo Theater twice for the famed Amateur Night.
In his teen years Gutty experimented with Rap music, but that genre did not fulfill his desire to deliver messages to his fans about love, and life.
In 2012, Gutty took the mid -Atlantic by storm when he released his family drama hit Child Support.
He has performed at many different popular venues including BB King
Blues Club and the National Underground in New York, the Apache Cafe in Atlanta (Gutty won first place in the open mic competition) and the Inkwell Centre in Tampa, Florida.
He has opened up for a slew of top national r&b and reggae artist such as Mario winans, The Wailers, Mavado, Richie Spice, also MTV actor, comedian “Lil Duval”.
His unique talent has not gone unnoticed. In March of 2016, Guttytook home the coveted Best Male Vocalist Award in the inaugural Independent Music Awards competition in Norfolk, Virginia.
He has recently worked with Founding member of the Grammy award-winning group Blackstreet, the legendary Levi Little as well as singer/songwriter Corte Ellis who has written songs for Britney spears and Beyonce. Gutty formed his backing band The Port of Reign late 2012. They have developed their own powerful sound that promises to bring audiences an exciting musical experience.
Singing his original songs Child Support, 7 City Rock, I’m Ready, his Afro -Country love song Lacey Ann and much more, Greg Gutty released his debut album “Ready For The World” in November 2014 which is available NOW!
